Biographical Text
Nihat Kahraman was born in Denizli, Turkey, in 1951. He graduated from Ankara Gazi Educational Institute in Painting in 1972.
From 1972-1976 he studied in Paris at the National School of Fine Art, specialising in art education, mural painting, frescoes, and mosaics. On returning to Turkey he lectured in painting at the Gazi Institute for 3 years, and in the Ministry of Education Culture Department. From 1992-2014 he worked at Hacettepe University in the Fine Arts Faculty establishing and teaching a course in mural painting.
From 1985 he has worked in Ankara State Opera and Ballet Institution as set designer for several ballets, concerts, and operas, and in 2012 he became Head Designer.
He has had more than fifty solo shows both home and abroad, and participated extensively in group exhibitions. Some of his murals are on display in Ankara's Batikent district. He has received many awards, including the Balkan Countries Painting Competition Award in Romania in 1983 and 1986 Europe-Asia Art Biennal Award.
Examples of his work are found in the Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul and Bolu State Painting and Sculpture museums, and personal collections both home and abroad. According to the artist, his brightly-coloured paintings are an exploration of the movement of figures in time and space.
