Biographical Text
Corneliu Antonescu was born in 1944 in Comana. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest in 1970, and between 1969 and 1984 was apprentice to the renowned painter Corneliu Baba. In the 1970s he took part in exhibitions across Romania and Europe. He emigrated to the United States in 1984 and became an American citizen in 1990. He began exhibiting at the Turner Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe, which was founded by Traian A. Filip, another Romanian.
Despite winning first prize in the National Painting Competition in Romania in 1976, as well as other national and international prizes, and exhibiting abroad between 1972 and 1974, Antonescu does not appear in either the main dictionary of contemporary artists of the period or the very detailed chapter on contemporary artists in ‘Romanian Painting’ by Vasile Florea.
